This never fails to take longer than expected! But here it is – Pantone‘s Color Predictions for Fall 2013!
Well, more or less – due to tech-trauma, I missed the first 5 minutes of today’s webinar
And yes, I introduced the palettes weeks ago – but this blend of Pantone’ wording and my interpretation, is overall Pantone’s vision of their color forecast and take on the year of color to come. I will provide the usual two-cents of wisdom…but for now, grab your favorite caffeinated beverage and hunker down to be dazzled by 2013′s colors!
The Hot Trends include:
Wolves and horses, featured prominently in patterning as well as in art and sculpture. ( I am nearly as apathetic about this as I was mushrooms, but shockingly, I was not consulted).
The world of art has always been an influence and indicator of trend directions that impact home interiors –pop art in particular enjoys a strong influence that will continue well into 2013, not so thoroughly enjoyed since the days of pop artists like Peter Max and Wayne Thiebaud. Colors featured in print attract attention and are forms of art in and of themselves; whether Photoshop, packaging, or some facsimile of packaging, a sculptural feel, classical shapes and traditional styling have made a strong resurgence, albeit in combinations with a more updated feel.
The excitement generated by the academy awards continues to place the film arts at the continual epicenter of trend setting. This year’s trends raise the curtain on an unabashed Hollywood ode to itself, with the hot reinvention of Art Deco style.
Stylized colors and linear elongate shapes characterized the deco period and its strong influence on much anticipated feature film The Great Gatsby (due to release at the end of 2012)

Forget the leading men – is that a vintage Deco La Lique chandelier??? image via Pantone 2013 Homes + Interiors Webinar
and the British series Downtown Abby, capturing the romance and elegance of the early twentieth century; a period characterized by patrician purples and wine tones;
these shown in combination with antique white (my least favorite of all neutral paint colors!) and softer pastel shades.
Many of 2012’s Hollywood’s story lines have included both dogs and cats. As 46% of the US population own dogs, and 39% incorporating feline family members, it’s fair to say that the pet market products feel the impact of color trends that influence their human owners.
Movies viewed at home again and again by kids mingle pet products and design motifs, instigating hot high-end sales far “fetched” (couldn’t resist) products like Norma Kamali pet attire, ranging into the price points of those jewels and miracle-mile fashions lavished on the memorably pampered lead pup in Beverly Hills Chihuahua – poor Mr. Piddles! His sweaters will continue to be off the rack specials…
Color wise kids films have boasted bright compliments from the yellow-orange of the Lorax, to the vivid blue of the Smurfs, (which we happily missed) and the vivid high definition stereophonic color in films such as Tin Tin, which inspired kids from age 4 – 92, leaving them, like Captain Haddock, with a thirst for a sequel. Jungle greens foretell yet another anticipated resurrection of the legend of Tarzan for 2013.
Yellow greens are continuing a splendid after-life, in their latest incarnation as an enduring trend and highly effective interior accent color. Felt as a strong influence in interior elements ranging from kids’ to adult décor, the appeal of their diverse and extended product base should serve to extend their current life through 2013 and beyond. So expect chartreuse to remain on the finely honed edge of interior color trends for some time to come!
The yellow-greens were characterized as psychological triggers for healthy diet and symbolic safety, with the speaker describing them as a “very, very versatile shade” ; not a distinction bestowed lightly upon color trends.
The new 2013 color palettes blend yellow greens with visually exciting complimentary shades such as corals, rose, melon, and terracotta reinventing many ethnic themes, celebrated around the color of the year, the spirited reddish-orange, tangerine Tango.
Every trend year includes a re-release of certain shades held over from the year prior. Enduring 2012 color trends are no exception inclusive particularly of those featured in the color report for fashion. The neon effects of 2012 maintain traction in 2013
not merely as slaves to style and fashion, but also for practical safety purposes. Neons are put to work on bikes and pet collars, and even on car trims in 2013.
The auto industry is well known for its co-morbid influences between fashion and interior furnishings. Note the Lotus Elan, slated for release in 2013
and the more attainable Yang to its Yin, the sporting red Dodge Dart, a reinvented inspired by the Alfa Romeo – I want one!
Trends in colored metallic, which continue their festive lifestyle as trend setters can best be seen in nail polish colors –
I cannot recall the number of occasions I have stood before a blank wall brooding over the practical drawbacks of painting a room in a metallic nail polish (not the least of which would be inhaling the fumes).
The nail polish companies are consummate at researching and recreating Pantone shades, as was evidenced this year, when for the first times ever, nail polish sales surpassed those of their kissing cousin – lipstick. When it comes to interiors, both silver and gold endure but colored metallics are absolute show stoppers!
Patterns, textures, and surface treatments – often demonstrated in an eclectic mix – will prevail in Fall 2013’s home markets, showcased in combination with great attention to details such as accordion pleating, scalloping and corrugated surfacing.
And now, without further adieu, (drum roll)
Pantone’s Fall 2013 Color Trend Forecast!
To create the color magic capable of influence and velocity in turbulent economic waters, the palettes of 2013 have been engineered to “coax and cajole, sooth or astonish, and renew and replenish” – all while hurdling a bar of raised consumer’s expectations. Functionality and color with staying power are key in an economy that remains unsteady at best, offering longevity that speaks to consumer fears of fears of fair-weather, short-lived fads that waste scarce design dollars. This can be seen most plainly in the move toward organic chic, which we have discussed ad-nausium as of late.
Skillfully balanced color palettes that play to the practical while still appealing to our aspirations will be crucial to both instigating homeware sales and differentiating our own interior signatures in 2013.
The Pantone Palettes:
Connoisseur - Elegant and old-worldly, displaying a sense of history and elegance. Emulating life in a castle, whether the perfect plate or the smooth finish of fine table linen. These fine sensibilities are reflected in a palette that is skillfully refined, yet not without a sense of understated drama. The collection includes monochromatic violets, orchids, deep mahogany, liquid pink, white alyssum, beechnut green all reflected against a base of champagne and a silver metallic.
Glamour is all about the Art Deco Era!
Sleek and sensuous, this palette is reminiscent of the art deco era, reinterpreted with contemporary influences. The beguiling resultant style emulates both confidence and reassurance, reflecting the naive assurance and a bid of the dark foreboding of hard times to come of this by-gone era. Rio Red, Monaco Blue, Chinchilla, Black, a silver gray and teal add glamour to glamour, with the addition of both silver and champagne beige.
New Old School is another palette emphatically connected to heritage and history. Somewhat collegiate and preppy, New Old School celebrates colors found more typically in flags and banners,
or book covers like that of Maison Christian Liagre, whose self-titled minimalist collective works comprise a book that is a cult-classic amongst design enthusiasts. Like Liagre, this palette supports a contemporized look.
Colors include Ribbon Red, Bright White, a Soda Light Blue, Nautical Blue and Ultramarine Green, Gargoyle and Microchip grays trace visible links from the past to a technological future, underscoring the contrast between the old world and the new.
From out West to Out-Back, cowboy and cowgirl style rides again, imbued in Pantone’s Rugged Individuals Palette.
The rugged individuals convey the legend that influences a look of the natural shadings of the vastness of the Prairie, and its interior trappings of polished leather, weather wood and animal hides.
Earthy raw Sienna tones mix with the flavor of Stone Washed Blue, and the Vintage Indigo that all markets have already embraced this spring.
Extracts employs flavorful notes of color, suggesting piquant and unexpected flavors that evoke exotic top-notes of Spiced Coral, Brandied Melon and Apple Cinnamon, quieted by the subtle overtones of dusty pink and clay, refreshingly balanced by a tart Green Banana.
I’m not sure whether I am at the edge of Italy’s Lake Como sipping the local spirits or whether I am fighting the clock on Cupcake wars, but in either regard I’m visually excited and getting hungry!
The Footprints of this palette are meant to lead the eye seductively through the influences of tribal color, and are not intended to tread there lightly! In the vibrant shadow of Tangerine Tango, and the bold influence of Peacock blue dictate clear directionality followed at the heels by vivacious and intentional shades of Fire Pink and Solar Powered Yellow. A verdant yellow-green called oasis provides shade from the heat of Sudan Brown.
The Sojourn palette offers yet another journey, both magical and intricate as reflected in heady mixtures of Sierra Wine Hue, the purple black intensity of a blackish plum, the rosy glow of Foxglove and Fuchsia against Pompous and Moss, nestled in between the grounded organic hues of Cobblestone and Shitake.
Surface Treatments is a feast in texture,
utilizing the polar opposites of the tactile world. Embracing the liquid colors of Ocean, Sea, Air, Maui Blue, Vapor Blue and a tempestuous Tornado Gray sea combines with land-locked shades of fallen Rock, Birch, and a vegetal Agape Green evoking an exotic island escape, braced for the turbulence that color tension adds to design!
Out of the Ordinary is Quirky, Odd, and unapologetic about being a bit obtuse with the audacity needed to capture attention and turn heads. Style, texture and shape reach out to catch the eye, but most frequently its color and combination of colors that captivate attention and create awareness. Colors like Bonnie Blue, Pureed Pumpkin and Chocolate Truffle are decadently intended to entice while Amber Green, Lyndon Green, Golden Rod, Bright Violet and Rosebud flesh out this youthfully expressive and uninhibited color group.

Thanks for a great post! Love the purples and metallics.
Thank you! I love the way that purple has entered the mainstream; it’s an easy color group to work with.
Great recap… Redoitdesign rocks!
Thanks so much! Sharing the forecast is the highlight of every spring! Glad I could help
Where can I get a published copy.of the pantone color forecast? I am learning more about this so if you have tips, let me know. Also, if it is a color forecast, how accurate does it typically end up? Or does pantone set the stage? Where do these colors come from each year?
Oh, my! Ok – let’s start at the beginning. You can get the published synopsis of Pantone’s color forecast at http://www.pantone.com – I hope that’s correct – I’m in NY at a hotel for NYGIF on my not so smart iPhone. You can’t get the full forecast unless you are in the trades so I share with everyone when the public announcments are made. Pantone is the source for standardized color and forecasts for the fashion, home, and ad trades. When I get back to home base on Monday I will share a bunch of links to answer your questions about what is predicted, what has been embraced and how you use all this in differentiating your design – but it’s all here in the archives. I am an expert on color and everything you need to know exists on redoitdesign! Explore, learn and have fun! I will be back on Monday with what’s new in fall decor & color so stay tuned and thanks for reading!
So much to love!
